Esther and Pete presented an interesting account of their December Eastern
Caribbean cruise. Approximately twenty-five of us enjoyed hearing about
their experiences and watching the video they brought.
The cruise, aboard Holland America’s MS Eurodam, featured lectures by
luminaries from The Nation magazine in addition to the more
standard cruise ship fare of shore excursions, stage shows, and great
meals. According to Esther, approximately four hundred of the two thousand
passengers were aboard especially for The Nation activities.
Among the featured luminaries aboard were Victor Navasky, Publisher
Emeritus, Katrina vanden Heuvel, Editor and Publisher, Calvin Trillin,
Deadline Poet, Governor Howard Dean, and several authors including one,
William Greider, of whom Mr. Holmquist is a particular fan. In fact, a
particular highlight of the whole cruise was the opportunity to mingle and
even share meals with personalities formerly known mainly by way of their
writings.
Bottom line: Cruising is fun, especially if your ship is populated by a
large number of philosophical fellow travelers. Thanks so much, Esther and
Pete, for sharing with us.
